Easy Tips for Enhancing Energy Efficiency in the Summer, Part 2
July 13, 2017If you checked in with us last month, you read some great tips on how to combat the huge energy costs that come with keeping a home cool in summer. In our continuing quest to help homeowners reduce energy consumption and lower energy bills, Renewal by Andersen of Northeast PA would like to share more easy pointers on how to make your home more energy-efficient throughout the hot summer months.
- Raise the temperature on your thermostat. While everyone wants to be as cool as possible in the summertime, setting your thermostat too low will cause your energy bill to skyrocket. Raising the set temperature on your thermostat from 72° to 78° will still allow you to remain reasonably comfortable, while saving up to 12% on cooling costs. If that temperature is too warm for you, try placing several fans throughout the house to help circulate the cooled air.
- Clean or replace air conditioner filters. Cleaning or replacing air conditioner filters is an important maintenance task that is often forgotten. Clogged filters obstruct airflow and allow dirt to get into the evaporator coil, which reduces its ability to function efficiently. Switching out a dirty, clogged filter for a clean one will take care of the problem and can help decrease energy consumption by 5-15%.
- Cut back on heat-producing activities. Summertime is the perfect time to become a grill master, which will allow you to cook outside and avoid heating up your home. If you do need to cook inside, try to steer clear of using the oven and stick with the microwave and stove for your cooking needs. Cut back on the use of dishwashers and dryers, and run only full loads when you do use them. Where possible, let dishes and clothes air dry.
