What’s the Real Lifespan of a ‘Lifetime’ Window Warranty?

When buying a product that includes a lifetime warranty, many people assume it will be warranted against defects for their lifetime, or at least that of the manufacturing company. Unfortunately, this isn’t the case with many lifetime warranties, including those offered by multiple window companies. The problem is that although some states have attempted to establish minimum requirements, “lifetime” doesn’t have a consistent legal description. In California, for example, a lifetime warranty has a mere three-year minimum requirement. You read that correctly: three years!
Why ‘Lifetime’ Rarely Means Lifetime
Surprisingly, there’s no federal law or regulation that establishes one set meaning for the term “lifetime.” Lifetime warranties are often very different – and cover much less – than people expect. “Lifetime” might mean the life of the original owner, the length of time the installer is in business or the customary lifespan of the product – it’s all in the fine print. A manufacturer is free to limit or guarantee their lifetime warranty for as long as they’d like, as long as they conspicuously disclose what “lifetime” means. In short, “lifetime” can mean any amount of time the manufacturer chooses.
