SmartSun™ with HeatLock® Glass Exceeds Efficiency Standards for the Northern Zone
January 04, 2018With ENERGY STAR® performance standards continually changing and tightening in an effort to make homes as energy-efficient as possible, our product developers are always in search of ways to improve the already-impressive efficiency of Renewal by Andersen® replacement windows and Andersen® doors.
When new ENERGY STAR standards for the Northern Zone went into effect on January 1, 2016, requiring an increased need for higher efficiency windows, Renewal by Andersen was ready with an innovative new window coating system that meets and even surpasses these stricter efficiency requirements. This year, consider starting things off right by installing this revolutionary new glazing system in your home and reap the benefits of our most energy-efficient glass yet.
Higher Energy Standards
Even before the newest ENERGY STAR standards went into effect in 2016, our product developers had already introduced High Performance™ Low-E4® SmartSun™ Glass with HeatLock® Technology™ in late 2015. While not all glazing systems can meet the tougher 2016 standards, especially in Northern climates with high altitude requirements, Renewal by Andersen’s SmartSun with HeatLock Glass achieves 100% compliance in all areas. If fact, it is so energy-efficient that you can get near triple-pane results in a dual-pane window!
How HeatLock® Glass Works
While those in warmer climates need glazing that reflects heat off glass, the opposite is true for people who live in the Northern Zone. The HeatLock glazing system features two coatings that work together to retain heat: a hard Low-E coating on the interior, room-facing surface of the glass, as well as a Low-E SmartSun soft coat on the exterior surface of the window. The additional room-side barrier is tough and durable, reflecting heat back into the interior of the home and providing greater insulation for your windows and patio doors. These coatings increase the energy efficiency of your windows, reducing heat loss and helping lower home heating costs, which is extremely helpful in counteracting the high heating bills incurred during bitter-cold Northern Zone winters.
Other Benefits
If you’re concerned about our HeatLock coatings blocking the natural light coming into your home, don’t be. They let in almost as much natural light as Renewal by Andersen’s standard SmartSun glass, so any reduction in light transmittance is minimal. In addition, this smooth, scratch-resistant finish is an available option with all of our replacement windows and doors, and all grille styles are compatible with it as well.
