High-Moisture Activities

Cooking, bathing and showering are the activities that release the most moisture into your house. It’s very important to have working exhaust fans which are vented to the outside that can draw the excess moisture out. Always use the exhaust fan above your stove when cooking and turn on your bathroom exhaust fan while showering or bathing. The fan should be left on until the mirror is clear again. This will also help prevent mold and mildew formation. In addition, check to be sure that your dryer is vented properly, since drying your clothes also releases a lot of moisture.

Attics & Crawl Spaces

In most areas, it’s smart to also vent attics and crawl spaces to the outside. For crawl spaces, it’s important to put down a good vapor barrier to block moisture and prevent it from coming up through the ground and into your home.

Blinds & Window Treatments

Curtains, drapes and blinds can contribute to the buildup of interior condensation by preventing warm air from flowing over the window. To avoid this, simply keep the windows uncovered as much as possible during the winter months. This has the additional benefit of letting in more sunlight, which will help warm your home naturally.

Insect Screens

Sometimes interior insect screens can block the flow of air, as well. Since there are no insects to worry about during the winter in most areas, consider removing and storing your insect screens until spring.

Most people install window coverings and never give them a second thought until a thick layer of dust has accumulated. If you take the time to clean your windows this spring, don’t your window coverings deserve some attention, too? By cleaning your draperies, you can make them look bright and new again by removing the dust that dulls the fabric. Washing also helps to extend the life of the curtains: the sun breaks down the threads if you don’t wash them.

How to Clean Curtains & Drapes

Experts recommend cleaning window treatments once or twice per year, and the method of cleaning depends on the material. Follow the directions on the care tag or refer to these general guidelines.

• Poly-cotton/cotton. Wash in a gentle cycle with cool water. Poly-cotton blends typically can be dried on medium heat, but 100% cotton curtains should be line-dried to prevent shrinkage.
• Sheer/lace. Sheer or lace curtains may be washed in a gentle cycle with cold water, but should be line-dried. The high heat of a dryer can set wrinkles in sheers.
• Lined curtains. Curtains and shades that are insulated can be washed on a gentle cycle in cool water, but should be line-dried to prevent damage to the insulation.
• Silk. Most curtains made of silk require dry cleaning.
• Brocade/suede/velvet. These heavy fabrics are often lined and pleated. Rather than taking them down, use a vacuum brush attachment to vacuum each panel on low, holding the brush about an inch from the fabric.

Roman shades can also be vacuumed, and vinyl shades can be sponge-cleaned. For wood and vinyl blinds, vacuum the slats and then wipe both sides clean with a cloth dampened with a solution of water and a bit of dish soap.

If you’re like us, you’re looking forward to the end of what has been a very long and dreary winter. Perhaps gearing up for spring cleaning will speed up the arrival of sunny days and warmer weather! When you’re ready to get rid of winter grime on your windows and look out on a fresh new world, here is a simple, step-by-step window cleaning checklist from Renewal by Andersen of Northeast PA.

1. Clean interior glass. If the temperature is still too cool to open up those windows, start by cleaning the interior glass. Remove interior grilles (if applicable) by lifting them away from the glass near the frame’s edge while leaving the clips in place. Clean the glass with mild soap and water, vinegar and water, or a liquid glass cleaner. Remove the cleaning solution with a squeegee or a clean, lint-free cloth. Avoid using newspaper as it may stain the Fibrex® trim. Rinse with clear water if soap has been used.
2. Clean exterior glass. To clean the lower sash, unlock the double-hung window and lift it up so your fist easily fits between the bottom of the window sash and the sill. Locate the wash assist tabs on each side of the frame and slide them until they click into the top of the sash (you’ll hear the click). Place both hands on the lower sash close to the tabs and pull firmly toward you. Carefully rest the sash on a chair or other sturdy object. Next, slide the wash assist tabs back to the top of the frame and lower the upper sash. Move the tilt-wash mechanisms, located at the top of the upper sash, inward while pulling the upper sash toward you. Gently rest it on the lower sash. Now you are ready to clean both sashes.
3. After cleaning your windows. To return the sashes to their original positions, start by lifting the upper sash until it snaps firmly back into place. Then lower it about an inch before sliding it to the top of the frame. Lift the lower sash until it snaps in place (you’ll hear a sound indicating that the balancers are reengaged and your upper sash will stay in place). Then lower it about one inch before sliding it towards the top of the frame.
4. Replace grilles. If you removed interior grilles, replace them by placing them against the glass and firmly pressing all along the grille and into the grille clips. The grille should fit snugly against the glass.

With temperatures continuing to drop as winter approaches, everyone wants to be indoors where it’s warm and cozy. And while wintertime is the perfect time to snuggle up indoors reading, playing and spending time together, keeping your indoor air fresh and clean should be a priority to prevent illness and increase comfort. To prepare your home for winter, follow these tips shared by Renewal by Andersen of Northeast PA to keep your home clear of dust, dirt and allergens.

• Clean and seal windows. Since you’ll be enjoying the outdoor view from the indoors for much of the winter, make time to thoroughly wash your windows and screens to take full advantage of the scenery outside your window and the natural light and warmth coming into your home. To ensure that cold air isn’t leaking in and warm air isn’t escaping, double-check the condition of the caulk and weatherstripping around your windows and replace as needed for maximum energy efficiency.
• Remember fans and lights. Ceiling fans and lighting fixtures tend to gather a lot of dust, due in part to the fact that they are frequently forgotten and not cleaned as often as they should be. This winter, get rid of built-up dust and dirt by carefully dusting and cleaning all fans and light fixtures. While you’re at it, switch the direction of your ceiling fans so they’re turning clockwise. Running fans clockwise at a low speed in winter will help push the warm air that rises up back down, making your house feel warmer.
• Change filters regularly. With your heater running and moving air throughout the house, it’s important to make sure that the air is as clean as possible. First, make sure the area around your HVAC unit is clear of anything that could block airflow, and then turn your attention to the air filters. For best results, go ahead and change out the old air filter with a new one. A quality filter can do an excellent job of filtering out dust, allergens, viruses and bacteria that could contribute to winter illnesses and allergies. To keep your home clean and fresh all winter, replace the filter every 90 days at minimum.
